James Thomas Jeter, was all about family. He loved history and genealogy, his children, his mom, … He had a sweet tooth, especially for the orange marshmallow circus peanuts, devoured popcorn and old Western movies, and was an original series Trekkie. James bestowed nicknames on everyone, dubbing his two daughters "Short Fat Fanny" and "Long Tall Fanny." His daughter Marcinda fondly recalls his humorous side: "When he would answer the phone, he would say 'Jeter’s Pool Hall, Eight-Ball speaking.' He didn’t even play pool!"
He felt the most alive when he was outside in the wilderness, fishing, camping and hiking well into his golden years. “He always told us that all he needed to survive was a comb and a bar of soap," his daughter Stacy teasingly recounts. "He was a very simple man who knew how to live off the land." In addition to being a lifelong Boy Scout leader and supporter, James spent his whole career under the US Department of Defense serving first in the Air Force, then the Navy then Civil Service. He flew all over the world as an airplane mechanic and could fix anything. In fact, Marcinda marveled at how he could tell what type of plane was flying in the air just by its shape passing by.
It was August 2020, when their father entered hospice, that two of James’s daughters — Stacy and Marcinda — first approached Memorial Treasures about making some pieces to remember their father. Stacy and Kim had met years earlier through mutual friends, and the two hit it off from the start. “What attracted me to Kim most of all was her empathy,” Stacy asserts. “I had to overcome a lot of trauma in my life, for which many people would judge me harshly. But not her. She has never been judgmental and made me feel like the strong survivor that I know I am!” Marcinda knew she wanted to do something special with her father's ashes but was apprehensive about handling them in a dignified way. She commends Kim for her gentleness not just with herself but with her father's cremains as well. Marcinda adds, "I think it's sort of Kim's goal to take the weirdness out of it."
Designing the pieces proved to be a deeply spiritual and healing process. Stacy reflects: “We had to make a little playlist of Dad’s favorite music, and she (Kim) prays over each piece of jewelry and talks to it. It’s as if she gets some sort of connection to the person and channels that into each piece. She wants to know about their loved one so she can honor them and be personal as she creates the pieces.” Marcinda and Stacy bonded even further and received a sort of closure by lovingly creating their treasures with Kim. They chose a wave form inside each pendant and anchor charms to remember their father’s love of fishing, his ties with the US Navy, and his affinity for the outdoors.
“Kim was just amazing. The pendants and key chains were beautiful, great quality and the price point was within our budget” Stacy glowed. “The best part is you would never know I’m carrying my dad’s ashes around my neck. It's just a beautiful piece of jewelry.”
