Where do I even begin? Ranger was not just the best dog ever, he was my best friend. Since the first day I met him at the shelter when he rolled over on his belly to the day we had to say our too early goodbyes due to cancer. As a family, we had no idea what this adorable, fluffy mutt was going to turn into. Before we knew it, he was a 120-lb gentle giant. If you weren’t a dog person, you still liked Ranger — it was inevitable.
Ranger was a simple dog. He was just happy to be by your side and share your Bojangles Supremes, of course. He loved car rides, not sure if it had anything to do with the drive thru line workers giving him almost his own full meal. He knew to sit under my feet at the dinner table every night. I shared everything with him. We got the chance to grow up together. A 9-year-old little girl and her 120-lb puppy playing dress up … talk about a “man’s best friend.”
Ranger lived to almost 12 years (84 dog years), and man is it unfair that we outlive them. As a big dog, you expect some knee or hip issues, but unfortunately we discovered a lump on his back side. Learning that it was cancer and that his clock was ticking a little faster was a very hard thing I had to accept. Not being able to ask him how he was feeling, I knew what I had to do. We took beach trips, as many car rides as possible, ice cream stops, and simply just laid in the driveway watching the squirrels and birds together.
The time came too soon when I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life. Being by his side everyday, it came apparent to me that he was no longer living life the way he deserved. I informed my parents, and we set up the nicest team to come to our home and put him down in peace in the only home he knew with this family. I received a sweet wooden box engraved with his name on it, and I have kept him by my bedside since. As I have moved homes through the years, he has always been close.
I had once mentioned getting his ashes into a piece of jewelry after he had passed. My mom had never forgotten about this. My mother had my boyfriend sneak her just a little bit of his ashes without me noticing. She was working with Kim to create a piece I will always cherish and keep close to my heart. Kim used a little bit of the ashes with some resin to fill in a paw pendant. She told my mother the color of the resin is determined by the way it mixes with the ashes. To my surprise, the color turned out almost exactly as the color of Ranger’s collar.
Kim could not have worked harder to make this gift happen. My mom met Kim at a market, and she had very specific ideas on what she wanted. Kim was tireless in finding the right pendant and paid attention to every detail to make it perfect and on time for my birthday. Needless to say, this is the most heartwarming gift I have ever received. The effort and care that was put into this pendant just adds to the love I have for this piece.
